BAVA REVIEW

Film: Baava
Rating: 2.25/5
Banner:
 Sri Keerthi Combines
Cast: Siddarth, Rajendra Prasad, Pranitha, Ahuti Prasad, Tanikella, Samrat, Sindhu Tolani, Brahmi, Ali, Kasi Viswanath, Bharath Babu, Raghu Babu, Prasad, Venu and others
Dialogues: Veera Pothana
Music: Chakri
Cinematography: Aravind Krishna
Story, screenplay, direction: Rambabu
Producer: M L Kumar Chowdary
Release date: 29/10/2010

The handsome Siddarth has been working hard to score success at the box office and this time, he teamed up with the veteran Rajendra Prasad to achieve it.

Story
Set on the backdrop of Venkatapuram in the Godavari district, Veera Babu (Siddarth) is the darling son of Sitaram Prasad (Rajendra Prasad). He is a complete brat and causes trouble in the village along with his group of friends (Prasad, Venu and others). He chances upon Varalakshmi (Pranitha), whose father (Ahuti Prasad) is a man of high status and talks to only such people. However, love blossoms between Veera Babu and Varalakshmi as they go a long way back. On the other hand, Sitaram Prasad has got a strong link with Varalakshmi’s family but stays away from them. What is that link? Does Veera Babu succeed in his love story? All this forms the rest of the story.

PerformancesSiddarth does his best to infuse life into his character and as usual, he is lively and expressive wherever required. His attempt to speak in the coastal slang must be appreciated. However, he got quite dramatic and artificial in the climax.

Rajendra Prasad was mild. His character was not etched properly and in a way, he was not used to his fullest caliber. He excelled in a bit of mono action in the fields in first half.

Pranitha looks homely and at the same time has enough sex appeal. She has shown ease and confidence in front of the camera. That way, she has scored in glamour and performance departments. Her intro scene with ‘Ringa Ringa..’ song is entertaining.

Ahuti Prasad was regular, Tanikella was neat, Samrat was handsome and did a good job, Brahmi and Ali comedy track took off well but fizzled out, Raghu Babu was brief, Prasad, Venu and gang gave many smiles, Kasi Viswanath, Bharath and others were there to fill the screen. The actress who did the role of Siddarth’s mom was decent, Sindhu Tolani was a misfit.

AnalysisThe film takes off at a very good level and the entire first half goes breezily with comedy and entertainment. However, things go completely down during the second half and with each passing scene, audience’s patience is tested.

The film suffers due to lack of depth during the emotional scenes and for some reason, the last twenty minutes went completely haywire and director lost track of what he wants to do. It was rather different to see audience clapping and whistling at some of the tragedy and emotional sequences which goes to show how the film got dragged and bored the viewer.

The storyline is quite routine and one has seen the routine twists before. On the bright side, the technical aspects are good. Cinematography was top notch. Background score was good, two songs were melodious, dialogues were well written, screenplay was okay. Editing was most needed during the second half to cut the drag scenes and melodrama. Locations were eye catching.

Overall, the openings for the film will be good due to the Siddarth factor and old loyal fans of Rajendra Prasad but then it is very hard for the film to get into the profit zone at the box office due to the squabbled second half.

Bottom-Line: Good first half- Very Bad second half

RAKTHA CHARITRA REVIEW

The most hypes and controversial Ram Gopal Varma film in last few years. A true story based on the faction wars of Raayalaseema between two families. A genre, that is like a child’s play to Ram Gopal Varma, by now. Has he lived upto the enormous hype he has created prior to the release?

The story by now is a well known thing. Veerabhadraya works loyally for Narasimha Reddy. This loyalty is not taken well by Nagamani Reddy as he feels he and his ilk are being ignored all because of Veerabharaih. To stop his growth Nagamani Reddy poisons the mind of Narasimha Reddy and creates a rift between Veerabhadrya and Narasimha Reddy. Following this he murders Veerabhadraya and his son Shankar. All this lead Pratap into the bloody mess of revenge. How he takes his revenge forms the rest of the story.

The first half of the films appears slow as a lot of time is taken on establishing the characters and their motives which are already known to many. In comparison the second half moves pretty quickly and ends abruptly as this is just half of the story. Performances are what makes people glue to the seats in spite of the all around predictability of the movie. Everyone does well in the roles assigned to them. Though the lack of local Telugu actors give us a feel of watching a dubbed movie at times the dubbing of main characters is taken care off. Off all the actors it’s Abhimanyu Singh who shines the most with his portrayal of Bukka Reddy. He completely transforms himself into a monster. Vivek Oberoi does well too. He takes time to sink in but gets settled in the role quickly and does well. Shatrughana Sinha and Kota Srinivas Rao too leave an impact even with less footage. Among female protagonists Zarina Wahab, Radhika Apte, Sushmita Mukherjee does well with their small roles.

Direction by Ram Gopal Varma is fairly simple and predictable all the way. We have seen him do this all before many a times. It’s just the milieu that he changes everything else is the same. The camera angles, shots division and blaring background music. However his voice over this time is a huge distraction to the going on. He should have left it to the audience to understand the proceeding rather than spoon feeding them what they already know. “Dabbunnoda” song was unnecessary and could have been removed all together. Barring this the editing is tight. Amol Rathod’s cinematography gives a documentary feel to the film which makes the action look realistic and hence giving us a chill.

Finally as a film said to be based on true incidents the films takes all liberties it can and distorts the facts to suit the screenplay. Also the timezone of the movie is not made clear at all. While some scenes are set up to remind the past some show a pretty modern setup. This factual inaccuracies and manipulations on part of Ram Gopal Varma robs the film off its true potential. Finally after all the hype we are shown no more than what we already know through the papers. Infact the film doesn’t show what is known properly too. The film is simply made to sensationalize a known thing that had a potential to be controversial success, hence an easy way to rake in the moolah.

Bottom line: A decent trailer for part-2

BRUNDAVANAM REVIEW

Rating: 3.75/5

Banner: Sri Venkateswara Creations
Starring: Jr.NTR, Kajal Agarwal, Samantha, Srihari, Prakash Raj
Cinematography: Chota K. Naidu
Fights: Ram-Laxman
Editing: Marthand K Venkatesh
Music: S.S.Thaman
Produced: Dil Raju
Story, Screenplay, Direction: Vamsi Paidipally

Jr. NTR’s Brindavanam is one of the most awaited Telugu movies in a long time. It is clear that no other
Telugu movie could give Endhiran - Robo a run for at the box-office. Added to this is the fact that
Komaram Puli and Mahesh Kaleja have not lived up much to the expectations of the people. Therefore, Jr.
NTR’s Brindavanam review and the verdict are the most talked movie of the town.

Story:

The story of the movie goes like this:

Rivals Srihari and Prakash Raj are step-brothers and Kota Srinivasa Rao is their father. Indu (Samantha)
is Prakash Raj’s nephew while Bhoomi (Kajal Agarwal) is Srihari’s niece. Krish( NTR) is the son of
Surendra (Mukesh Rishi) who is a rich industrialist from Hyderabad. He loves Indu (Samanta) and
introduces her to his family and gets green signal for the marriage.

Indu’s best friend is Bhumi ( Kajal) who wants to pursue higher studies in USA, but her father Bhanu
Prasad (Prakash Raj) fixes her marriage with Ajay, who is a spoiled brat in the village and also her brother-
in-law. Bhumi who is disinterested in marriage lies to her father that she already had a boy friend in
Hyderabad. Bhanu Prasad asks Bhumi to get her boyfriend to their village so that they can induce hatred
in Bhumi against her boyfriend.

Bhoomi then approaches Indu and requests Krish to act like her boyfriend. Indu convinces NTR to act like
Bhoomi’s boyfriend and save her from the marriage. As part of the plan Krish reaches Laksmi Puram

along with Bhumi. When NTR goes to the village to set things right for Bhoomi, he comes to know about
the rivalry between the two villages, Lakshmi Puram and Venkata Puram. NTR also discovers that Indu
and Bhoomi come from same family.

The movie encapsulates how Krish unites Srihari and Prakash Raj and whom he finally gets married to in
the end.

Analysis:

Brindavanam is tipped to be a romantic family entertainer and Director Vamsi Paidipally attempts to
showcase NTR as a class hero with mass instincts and hook the families. And we have to say he has just
managed to pull things off - only just. Brindavanam is one such effort from Vamsi Paidipally trying to
enhance NTR image amongst the class and families with melo drama and humor.

NTR Brindavanam comes with comedy, humor, sentiment and too much melodrama. NTR Jr. will be seen
in an out and out family entertainer this time and if it's not for NTR, Brindavanam could have bitten the
dust without any second thoughts.

NTR, DIL Raju were targeting family audiences may be for the first time. As such, Vamsi Paidipally dealt
NTR characterization with utmost care whilst ensuring that his mass image is not being hampered.
Perhaps not the best of scripts NTR has zeroed in, but Brindavanam crosses the rope though NTR
depiction and performance.

Dil Raju clearly accentuates on NTR targeting family audiences. As such, you could glimpses of
Bommarillu and Parugu. The first half of Brindavanam runs crisply with few super action sequences, the
second suffers from loads of sentiment and family drama. And the climax is rather peculiar - may be
something that NTR, DIL Raju and Vamsi Paidipally collectively agreed on.

Performances:

NTR steals the show and his performance is truly commendable. While Adhurs gave NTR a tinge of
comedy disposition, Brindavanam fosters and strengths his roots amongst families as well. He did
extremely well in action sequences, which were brilliant. But the steps for the dance were not as expected
and his costumes are very poor.

Samantha is totally a misfit for the role of Indu. Looks like she's unable to take on mass or medium
characters. But these are the roles she needs to don down the role. Kajal Agarwal is adequate.

Prakash Raj and Srihari were apt as step brothers and their body language suited the characters.
Brahmanandam and Venu Madhav also did their part.

Technicalities:

Music by SS Thaman is pretty good, but re-recording is only good in parts. May be he could have done a
better job. Camera work by Chota k Naidu is commendable and the locations were also appealing. The
camerawork by Chota k Naidu was great during the action episodes. The CG and graphic works were
reasonably good, but surely Marthand K Venkatesh, the editor might have had a tough time. Surely the
second half needs more editing.

KALEJA REVIEW 1

Movie: Khaleja
Rating: 3/5

Banner: Sri Kanakaratna Movies
Cast: Mahesh Babu, Anushka, Prakashraj, Rao Ramesh, Shafi, Ali, Sunil, Brahmi, Subbaraju, Tanikella, Raghu Babu, M S Narayana, Dharmavarapu, Amit, Veda etc
Music: Mani Sharmaa
Cinematography: Yash Bhatt, Sunil Patel
Editing: Sreekar Prasad
Story, screenplay, direction, dialogues: Trivikram Srinivas
Producers: Singanamala Ramesh, C Kalyan
Release date: 07/10/2010

Mahesh Babu is back after a hiatus and the expectations have been high on this ‘Khaleja’. Given the title controversy, the mileage was sufficient.

Story
Sitarama Raju (Mahesh) is a taxi driver who comes to Rajasthan searching for a person’s family. He chances upon Gemini TV person (Sunil) and reveals his story of coming there.

This also includes his encounters with Subhashini (Anushka) whose presence brings in bad luck and loss. On the other hand, there is Siddhappa (Shafi) who is sent by his guru (Rao Ramesh) in search of a god sent man who can protect the village from a death threat and extinction.

One thing happens after the other and Sitarama Raju comes across Siddhappa who believes that Raju is the man. Meanwhile, Subhashini’s father (Tanikella) is planning to get her engaged to the son of GK (Prakashraj) who has got a motive behind it. How are all these people connected and what happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Performances
Mahesh Babu is a complete show stealer in the film. He is highly energetic and his dialogue delivery stands apart. Unlike his regular mild approach with one liners, he rolls out flurry of words and entertains. As for his looks, he is handsome as ever and has made his presence felt strongly.

Anushka looks gorgeous and special focus has been made on her legs when it comes to dialogues. Her screen chemistry with Mahesh was neat and not much of a skin show from her this time.

Prakashraj was brief and he did his bit as required. Perhaps the etching of his character should have been more powerful. That would have given strength to the villain image and good climax.

The comedy track of Ali, Sunil gave few laughs. Brahmi was funny at few places, Tanikella was elegant, Subbaraju made his presence felt, Rao Ramesh was excellent, Shafi was impressive, Dharmavarapu and M S were brief. The others did their bit as required.

Analysis:
“One who lives for his own self is considered to be dead. One who lives for others with unselfishness and love live forever” – Swami Vivekananda

This is the crux of the movie that knocks the doors of every heart.
  • How GK (Prakash Raj) leads his life with selfishness and how he breathes his last with pain and grief.
  • How the villager Sidhdhappa (Shafi) holds faith in God and dies a painless death with pride filled eyes.
  • How Raju (Mahesh) manifests God in himself with unselfishness and true love for others.
The above three aspects build the ulterior message in the film. There is a symbolic scene of man’s connection with God which holds conviction. When our hero asks for Rs 10 for himself, his wish will not be fulfilled. And when he asks the same Rs 10 with a wish to feed a hungry boy, the donor gives him Rs 100 and goes. Only unselfishness can see the bountiful God. Mahesh Babu says in a dialogue here, “I understood God. He is not hiding anywhere. He is there in every heart. He fulfils wishes only when asked for the well being of others. What the hell Rs 100 when asked for Rs 10…he will shower even lakhs and crores”. This message is packaged and delivered with all commercial elements.

The interesting part of the film is that hero never fights for his selfish possessiveness on heroine. He never fights to gain supremacy on villains. He fights only for the lives of others. Hence he becomes God.

But how Trivikram dealt his narration in bringing this story on to celluloid? How the aspects those really matter for the success of the movie are placed? The music is good but only ‘sada siva sanyasi…’ is truly hitting the senses of audiences. That number takes position-1 among all the songs.  ‘Makathika maya maschindra..’ is ok to some extent. The song on Lord Krishna sounds good. Others are mundane. Background score is average.

First half is dealt with humor and the actual story starts only after 1 and half hours. Mahesh Babu made the movie hilarious with his typical dialogue delivery never seen before. Second half has some real material. Humor element continues here as well. But emotion elements are forced but not convincing enough. Trivikram seems to have inspired by ‘Magadheera’ with Rao Ramesh’s part. Brahmanandam has got very small role. Sunil entertained very well. Anushka’s iron-body characterization is also interesting.

Coming to screenplay, that is a bit complicated. Audiences find it a bit difficult to get connected. The introduction shot of Mahesh Babu is weak. The dialogues are good but here and there missed the grip and not up to the expectation. But on a whole the Trivikram-factor worked for this.

To sign off, watch the movie at your leisure, get entertained and also try to take some message into your life that can bring in some change in you and society.

Bottom-Line: Watch it without expectations

NATIONAL WEB-SITES ABT ROBO

The movie ‘Robo’ has been attracting huge attention all over the nation and also among the population of South East Asian nations. The movie reached the expectations of majority audiences. Even the critics from various regions have given a hit rating on a whole. The movie released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions in India and hence the critics from North and South have given their instant opinions. Let us see what the popular national portals wrote about ‘Robo’ and its rating.
“That's not all, this Robot is Superman + Spiderman + Terminator + Godzilla, all rolled into one. There's more to this Robot. It can replicate itself, wage a vicious battle, turn into an Anaconda or a monster ball and wipe off an entire army. Whew! Known for larger than life canvas, ROBOT is Shankar's most expensive and if I may say so, his most imaginative film thus far. And who better than Rajnikant for the pivotal role”!
 --Bollywoodhungama.com (4/5)

“Parts of the film are superbly entertaining - the scale is spectacular, the story is ambitious and the special effects are impressive.  But parts, especially in the second half, are so needlessly stretched and cacophonous, that you're just waiting for it to end. Still, I strongly recommend that you see Robot, to partake in writer-director Shankar's prodigious imagination and to revel in the sheer force of nature that is Rajinikanth”.
--NDTV (3.5/5)

“This is India's most expensive blockbuster. Each crore spent over every minute of this movie shows, if you watch it for the spectacle alone. The sheer scale and special effect of this film remains hitherto unsurpassed in Indian cinema. The film smartly borrows from the genre's Hollywood tradition, right from Terminator to Transformers. Which is to say, there is yet an emotional connect. This film, just a few feet too long, is fine entertainment by itself. I'm evidently an atheist to this religion, so I guess, you can trust this note”.
--Hindustantimes (3/5)

“But Robot isn't effect alone. It has a plot too which, if you really pay attention, has a meaning and a message. The film carries forward the man-machine war through interesting twists and turns and creates a lively love triangle between scientist Rajnikanth, medico student, Aishwarya Rai and robot Rajnikanth”.
--Timesofindia (4/5)

“Dozens of directors claim that they have the commercial formula down pat but none can be compared to Shankar who belongs to the rare breed of film-makers who can actually combine a genre like science-fiction with spicy masala quotient. Here is also where Shankar distinguishes himself as someone who understands star-power and the means to manipulate it: all through the first half, the pace is steady, making use of its star-players' charisma appropriately and unleashing it at others”.
--rediff (3.5/5)

The Rajni fans in Chennai are on cloud infinite at this point of time. They are happy to see their star rocking the nations with his hit flick at the age of 61. Aishwarya Rai pairing up with Rajni also added commercial value to the movie in the biggest way possible. It’s a scale up for director Shankar and Sun Pictures indeed made its presence felt in international movie business.

ROBOT REVIEW

Film: Robo
Rating: 3.75/5Cast:
Rajni Kanth, Aishwarya Rai, Danny Dengzompa, Santhanam, Karunas
Lyricists: Vanamali, Suddala, Bhuvana Chandra
Dialogues: Sree Rama Krishna
Music: AR Rehman
Producer: Kalanithi Maran
Main Story: Sujatha
Cinematography: Rathnavelu
Editing: Anthony
Costume: Mary E Vogt
Screenplay-Director: Shankar
Released On: 1st Oct 2010

This is the most talked about movie in recent times. Huge technical values, whopping budget, star casting in high élan and a gen-next concept…all conglomerated to spell out ‘Robo’.

Story:
Dr Vaseekaran (Rajni Kanth) makes a Robot and gives him his own shape. The Robot is omniscient and omnipotent. His motive is to prepare his Robot to join Indian Army. He wishes to make many more such Robots to help Army and reduce loss of lives during wars. But Dr Vaseekaran’s enemy, another scientist (Danny) disproves that his Robot cannot fit to be used for military purposes as it cannot think like a human. He states that it has no emotions and reasoning capacity.

Dr Vaseekaran pumps in human feelings and reasoning capabilities and makes him almost a human. But things turn upside down. Robot starts loving Sana (Aishwarya Rai), the fiancée of Dr Vaseekaran. Robot gets attracted to Sana and that makes Vaseekaran angry. He destroys it.

But the enemy scientist takes the destroyed Robot, repairs it and infuses destructive mechanism in it. He wants it to sell to some international gangsters. But the love for Sana in Robot aggravates as wild possessiveness and that pesters Sana.

Robot becomes very strong physically and becomes like a cruel demon. It even kills the scientist who gives him second birth. It creates massive destruction to society by creating many Robots like itself.

How Dr Vaseekaran deactivates the Robot and brings things to peace is the end of the film.

Performances:
Rajni Kanth is tremendously good at age 60. His moves, his gait and expressions didn’t wane even a bit. He got connected to new age kids and they cannot forget him for rest of their lives. That way Rajni Kanth added another 60 years to his image.

Aishwarya Rai is the true asset for the movie. Her glamour made a lot of difference. As a true goddess of beauty she enchanted everyone.

Danny is apt in serious role. His performance is in contemporary international standards.

If there is anything to speak about the film, that’s technical brilliance.

Music is in gen-next style. Sound is marvelous. Canning of songs is opulent. But the lyrics in Kilimanjaro are lewd and weak. Rest of the songs are fine.

Director Shankar deserves great mention for making this biggest feat possible on Indian screen with a message.

Analysis:
“It is selfishness that we must seek to eliminate. I find that whenever I have made a mistake in my life, it has always been because ‘self’ entered into the calculation. Where self has not been involved, my judgment had gone straight to the mark”- Swamy Vivekananda

This saying of great soul of Indian soil lingers in the mind while watching this film. Knowingly or unknowingly Shankar made a movie basing on this saying.

It’s a movie for world children.

Yes, it truly influences the senses of new generation kids those developed relation only with video games but not human beings. Hardly there are joint families now where grand parents teach morals to kids. And the kids tend to listen only to machine. They tend to follow what machine says. And director Shankar aptly takes the way through machine, the Robot, to teach values.

Kids run away listening to words kama, krotha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya…but they assimilate that when shown in a dramatic way. That too, not in the style of Chandamama stories. They want something with scientific reasoning. Hence the path is chosen through ‘Robot’.

How peaceful the Robo was and how useful that was to society when it’s free from those 6 evils. And how it becomes detrimental to itself and society when injects them into it. That’s aptly narrated.

The true essence of the movie is narrated in the end. The dialogues delivered by Robot while dismantling himself are hitting the hearts. The dialogues touch every human being with introspection.  And at last, a girl looks back and goes with a thoughtful grimace. That is a symbolism for entire world kids those will be in thought process from now.

First half is entertaining. The first 30 minutes of second half are not gripping in right standards. That part is boring. But the climax action episode is marvelous to be on Indian screen. The last few closing dialogues are impressive and with true essence.

Hinduism or Islam or Christianity or Shintiosm or Taosim…every religion says one who is free from anger is the true strong man and one who shuns self is the true atman!!! ‘Anger’, as Sukhabodhananda says, is one letter less to danger. That is the true cause for destruction. Let us wish that this movie sows a seed at least in a few minds of children to prevent self entering into calculation while taking decisions….like a school girl that turns back and goes at the end on the screen..!!!!

Bottom-line: Watch it
